Arrival Survival in Hollywood Tip #2

by Tamara Rambaran on March 17, 2010

wallet.jpgWhether you are waiting for your O-1 Visa, here on your student visa, or just checking things out for a couple of months traveling on a limited budget or not, here are some things to consider so you’re not surprised by the fees. For all of your utilities, power, phone, the Internet, and all the unexciting things that people don’t mention, you will have to provide deposits for everything! And I mean everything! Most deposits can be in the range from $50 to $250 (USD). However, you can ask if they have ways to waive the fee, such as doing direct debit from your bank account will waive the fee or sometimes, you can just luck out with a friendly representative! Do ask, the worst they can say is no. To avoid most of these setup fees, looking for a roommate situation, or a shared accommodations is your best option, especially if you’re here for a short while because all of the services are already set up. Ask your TVI Actors Studio consultant; they usually have a list of people looking for roommates, or other housing options.

Actors: Arrival Survival in Hollywood

by Jessica on March 16, 2010

suitcase.jpg
Whether you are moving to LA from within the US or internationally, there are a few things I’ve learned that can make life a little easier before you arrive and once you arrive!

Survival Tip #1

Looking for a place to live can be done via websites such as craigslist.org, Marketplace on Facebook, and a whole host of others. You will find that most people are very accommodating, but the best situation to look for if you do not have a SSN, is to find someone who is subletting. Rental companies have a lot paperwork to go through and it may cost you more than necessary if they are even able to rent to you. So try to find a private owner, create a great report with them and life can be a little easier. They may even throw in a fridge for you! Which I learned is not a mandatory appliance. One woman even said it’s a personal thing. Don’t know what is personal about keeping my food cold in a warm climate, but I just rolled with it. If you can find a place before you arrive that’s awesome, but if not, don’t panic. If you are studying at TVI Actors Studio, there are hotels nearby that offer TVI students discounts for short or long term stays or you can speak to your consultant about if they know anyone needing a roommate. Most areas are safe and you will learn quickly that no matter where you live, it will always take a minimum of twenty minutes on a good day and an hour on a not so good day to get to your destination, add more time to that if taking the bus. You can check schedules at metro.net. The more you take care of before you arrive will save you heaps of time and allow you to deal with the other surprises that may come your way. I will have more survival tips to make your arrival here easier so you can focus on acting and having fun!
