Whether its a guest starring appearance on “Gossip Girl” or being featured on a TV commercial, getting cast is usually the final step for an actor in search of a job. Being prepared is the key to a successful career. Many believe that just meeting a casting director is all that is needed to “get the job”. Well, here’s a reality check: Casting Directors meet or see hundreds if not thousands of eager actors. Which means that unless there is something spectacular, unique, special about you, chances are that you will not be remembered. There is hope however. Consider working with a Casting Director who also teaches a class. This is now a double win for you. First, you learn about what skills you may need, tips for success and gain understanding about the casting process. Second, you can make a positive impression about your talent and personality over time with a class taught by the same casting person who may just need what you have. Of course, there is no guarantee of employment, just an opportunity to learn AND increase your visibility. This is especially true if you work with top casting people like Pat McCorkle, Rebecca Yarsin, Findley Davidson.

(pictured here are NY Broadway Casting Directors and TVI Actors Studio Instructors Pat McCorkle and Stewart Howard)

This is the question many actors want the answer to. The answer is: be one. Think, act, plan, observe and commit to your decision to become a professional. Its not just a mind set but rather a foundation with which all motivation is focused. Your career is not a concept, but a reality! The long-term career actor has formed a comprehensive agenda that is adhered to; classes being at the top of the list. It is vital to the growth of the actor’s talent to stay “sharp”. Meeting industry professionals like agents and casting directors, working with other actors, listening to the business buzz, are all useful criteria to being a professional. Check out http://actor-preneur.com/ for a great place to begin your journey!

So I work at TVI and I’m in Jonathan Strauss’ Advanced TV/Film class here as well, learning to make the most of my audition technique and acting skills for Film and TV. And I have to confess… it works! Today I went in for the NBC show Mercy – a small role – but using what Jonathan teaches turned it into so much more – not just as a good thing for the audition but for me as an actor! It made my audition much fuller and enjoyable so whether I book the role or not (and of course I want to book it!), I came away feeling secure and satisfied with my performance and that’s exactly where I want to be as a working actor.
